How to block spam calls on iPhone and Android

Telemarketing is regulated, but it hasn't gone away. Here are the settings and services that silence it, from the simplest to the most complete.

On iPhone

In Settings, then Apps and Phone, "Silence Unknown Callers" sends numbers that aren't in your contacts straight to voicemail. It is drastic: useful calls from unknown numbers, like a delivery driver, are silenced too.

To block a specific number, open your recent calls, tap the info button next to the number, then "Block Caller".

A caller ID app like Ylumo is turned on in Settings, then Apps, Phone, "Call Blocking & Identification". It labels or blocks known spam numbers without silencing every unknown caller.

On Android

In the Phone app, Settings often has a "Caller ID & spam" option that filters suspicious calls. The exact name depends on the manufacturer.

To block a specific number, long-press it in your call history and choose "Block".

Ylumo can become your default caller ID and spam app: it shows the caller's name while your phone rings and can reject calls rated as spam automatically.

Use an opt-out list

In France, Bloctel is the free telemarketing opt-out list: once registered, companies you have no ongoing contract with may no longer call you. Many countries have an equivalent, such as the National Do Not Call Registry in the United States.

Report abusive calls

In France, text the number to 33700: carriers use these reports to cut off fraudulent numbers. In Ylumo, reporting a number as spam warns everyone else.

Filter the telemarketing ranges

Since 2023, bulk-calling platforms in France must use twelve dedicated prefixes (01 62, 01 63, 02 70, 02 71, 03 77, 03 78, 04 24, 04 25, 05 68, 05 69, 09 48, 09 49). Ylumo recognises all of them and can block them at once.

Questions

Is blocking one number enough?

Rarely. Telemarketing platforms change numbers often. Blocking a whole range, or relying on community reports, works better.

Is telemarketing banned on weekends in France?

Yes. Since 1 March 2023, unsolicited telemarketing is banned on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and only allowed on weekdays from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 8pm.
